Many of the papers in this volume were first presented at the Third International Great Apes of the World Conference, held July 3-6, 1998 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The editors of this volume, the first in a two-volume series, are world renowned, having dedicated most of their lives to the study of great apes. The world's premiere primatologists, ethologists, and anthropologists present the most recent research on both captive and free-ranging African great apes. These scientists, through deep personal commitment and sacrifice, have expanded their knowledge of chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. With forests disappearing, many of these studies will never be duplicated. Jane Goodall, geb. 1934 in England, reiste 1957 nach Afrika und arbeitete als Verhaltensforscherin im Gombe-Nationalpark, Tansania. Parallel hierzu studierte sie Ethnologie. Ihr Studium schloss sie 1965 in Cambridge mit der Doktorwürde ab. Jane Goodall war an mehreren Forschungsprojekten beteiligt, ist Inhaberin berühmter Lehrstühle und erhielt viele Preise und Orden, darunter die Auszeichnung "CBE" ("Commander of the British Empire") und die "Medaille der National Geographic Society". Sie hat Bücher über Verhaltensforschung und Kinderbücher geschrieben, die in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt wurden. Als Initiatorin von "Roots & Shoots", einem Programm für den internationalen Umwelt- und Artenschutz, begeistert sie insbesondere Kinder und Jugendliche in zahlreichen Ländern für ein ökologisches Engagement. Unermüdlich auf Vortragsreisen, verbringt Jane Goodall die wenigen verbleibenden Wochen des Jahres im englischen Bournemouth.
