Volume XII,2 of the Historical-Critical Edition of Droste-Hülshoff's works and correspondence contains the Commentary on the letters addressed to Droste-Hülshoff in the years 1841-1848. This volume brings the edition to a close. It contains commentaries on a total of 303 letters. The aim of the Commentary is to bridge the historical distance to the letters and facilitate understanding for their readers. Alongside detailed commentaries on individual passages, including information on persons, difficult words and things referred to, reference is also made to the foundation and composition of the texts, their dates and the routes by which the letters were sent. A detailed index of persons closes the volume.
