Katharina Al-Shamery ist Professorin für Physikalische Chemie an der Universität Oldenburg und Gründungsdirektorin des Zentrums für Grenzflächenforschung der Universitäten Oldenburg, Osnabrück und Bremen. Ihre Forschungsarbeiten wurden mehrfach ausgezeichnet, darunter mit dem Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein-Preis der Deutschen Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie.
Zusätzlich zu ihrer Forschung widmet sie sich der Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses: Mit einem Labor für Grundschüler und als Initiatorin des Frühstudierendenprogramms an der Universität Oldenburg führt Frau Al-Shamery Kinder und Jugendliche an die Naturwissenschaften heran. Darüber hinaus tritt sie mit Tagungen wie "Vom Hexenkessel der Materialwissenschaften" unter der Schirmherrschaft von Annette Schavan für eine stärkere Rolle von Frauen in den Wissenschaften ein.
