Dr Jonathan Oates has been Borough Archivist for Ealing since 1999 and has had over twenty books published, mostly about aspects of London's local and criminal history. He has also given numerous talks about Ealing's history. He received his PhD in History from the University of Reading in 2001.

For much of its history Ealing was a rural village in Middlesex, outside London. Improved communications encouraged its development as a market garden for the capital and later it became an attractive suburb in West London, nicknamed 'Queen of the Suburbs', a bustling area with beautiful open spaces, historic buildings and even film studios.
