In tonal languages, both lexical-level prosody and sentence-level prosody primarily manifest through pitch modulation. Their intricate relationship has always been a fascinating yet bewildering subject to phonologists and phoneticians. This book therefore examines different components of intonation in a tonal language, Tianjin Mandarin, to discuss the interaction between different levels of speech prosody in production and perception.
