Kristin Moen Saxegaard zeigt am Beispiel des Buches Ruth, wie Komplexität von Charakteren im Alten Testament dargestellt wird bzw. welche Funktion sie ausfüllt. Jede Figur im Buch Ruth hat ihre eigene Stimme und stellt ein spezifisches Thema zur Diskussion: Naomi drückt ihre Bitterkeit aus, Boaz ist der Fröhliche, Ruth betont ihre Rolle als Fremde und Yahweh schweigt. Die Komplexität der Charaktere weist also auf theologische Themen hin, wie z. B. das Problem des Fremdseins oder die Frage nach dem Schweigen Gottes. Die Interaktion der Stimmen der Figuren zeigt vielfältige Sichtweisen auf diese und andere Probleme auf und ermöglicht so neue Interpretationen des Buches Ruth. Die Autorin liest die biblischen Charaktere als Beispiele, wie die biblischen Texte mit bestimmten Problemen umgehen.
