During the general mobilization of August 1914, diaries became the medium of the hour: as miniature notebooks in front soldiers' kit bags, as preprinted war calendars, or as collections of newspapers in school lessons. This study looks at previously overlooked diaries to show how a wealth of war impressions were processed in war diaries and how a private historiography began to take shape all over Germany and France.
