The scream is both an acoustic and a border phenomenon of the human voice. For this reason it has always been understood as an event that defies aesthetic reflections, media practices and representations in equal measure. Joseph Vogl sees the scream as the subject of media-historical and art-historical exploration, consequently as a case of a history in which humans neither hear themselves nor belong to themselves.
