Presented in an expertly crafted, expensively bound edition, each volume contains papers on a variety of subjects. The Yearbook does not contain any excavation reports, news items or book reviews; it is dedicated exclusively to research discussions on known larger complexes of finds. Thus with its critical apparatus and catalogue references, where appropriate, it guarantees a state of the art account.

In seinem Jahrbuch publiziert das Deutsche Archäologische Institut seit 1885 jährlich etwa zehn Aufsätze, die überwiegend den Bereich der Klassischen, d.h. griechisch-römischen Archäologie abdecken; fallweise werden auch frühbyzantinische bis frühislamische Themen oder solche der anatolischen und westeuropäischen Frühgeschichte berücksichtigt. Die Inhalte des Jahrbuchs sind in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ständig spezialisiert und erweitert worden: Kunst- und Stilgeschichte, Ikonographie, Hermeneutik, Typologie, Materialzusammenführung und Rekonstruktion von Plastik und Architektur. Jeder Band des großzügig ausgestatteten Werkes bringt Aufsätze unterschiedlicher Thematik. Das Jahrbuch enthält keine Grabungsberichte, Nachrichten oder Buchbesprechungen; es dient ausschließlich der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit bekannten, umfassenderen Fundkomplexen. So ist einschließlich Anmerkungsapparat und ggf. Katalogangaben der neueste Stand der Forschung gewährleistet.
