At the end of World War II, around 11 million German soldiers were prisoners of war, more than 700,000 of them in France. Fabien Théofilakis presents a comprehensive history of these "defeated victors," which is also an analysis of the transition from war to peace. He makes use of extensive source material from international archives and personal interviews conducted with over 60 former prisoners of war.
