Beschreibung

Few photographers have had such an extensive, global impact as South African Zanele Muholi, whose work unites art and activism. Their practise is a decades-long fight for protection, dignity and legal rights for the Black, queer community through photographic means. Muholi's adept visual language that holds both strength and vulnerability, a deep understanding of photography and a wide public appeal. This book, published on the occasion of Muholi receiving the world's most prestigious photography prize, the Hasselblad Award, presents and contextualises six of their most iconic series, from the early radical and intimate work Only Half the Picture through the ground-breaking, collective archive Faces and Phases to the compelling, confrontational self-portraits in Somnyama Ngonyama. Text: Louise Wolthers, Dragana Vujanovic Östlind
