Nietzsche's Philosophy in the Light of Our Experience

Nietzsche's Philosophy in the Light of Our Experience (Nietzsches Philosophie im Lichte unserer Erfahrung, 1947) by Thomas Mann was written in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, at a decisive moment in the reassessment of Europe's intellectual legacy following the fall of Nazism. The essay was first published in 1947 in Die Neue Rundschau, then based in Stockholm, before being incorporated into Mann's collected essays. Written shortly after Mann's years of exile and his public opposition to the Hitler regime, the work enters directly into the debate over the Nazi appropriation of Nietzsche, particularly the ideological misuse of concepts such as the "will to power," the "overman," and the "master morality." Against this background, Mann rejects both simplistic condemnation and apologetic exoneration, proposing instead a historically grounded interpretation of the internal tensions that run throughout Nietzsche's thought.
In this interpretation, Mann reconstructs the profound unity of Nietzsche's life and work, from The Birth of Tragedy to Ecce Homo, advancing the thesis of an underlying continuity founded upon the affirmation of life, art, culture, and instinct against morality, rationalism, and the historical consciousness of modernity. At the same time, he traces the progressive intensification of this impulse, whereby Nietzsche's early aestheticism gradually develops into an increasingly ambiguous exaltation of strength, cruelty, and war, without thereby reducing him to a conscious precursor of National Socialism. The essay culminates in a profoundly humanistic reinterpretation: Nietzsche emerges as a tragic figure of modernity, whose work embodies the drama of an extreme consciousness, at once a radical critique of bourgeois culture and a stylistically heightened testimony to the spiritual tensions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
