He served as a Confederate general during the American Civil War, and afterward was greatly involved in railroad development in the Southern United States.Thomas M. Logan was born in 1840 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the son of William Logan, a local judge. Logan received his education at South Carolina College, located in Columbia. He graduated in 1860, standing first in his class.
