Pulmonary embolism is the third most common cause of cardiovascular death, accounting for 60,000 to 100,000 deaths in the United States annually. The PERT Consortium, an international multidisciplinary professional society, was formed in 2015 with the goals of advancing clinical, educational, and research activities to advance the care of pulmonary embolism worldwide.

There is no single authoritative reference source dedicated to pulmonary embolism. This handbook fills a major gap in reference needs for pulmonary embolism and will be attractive to a broad audience from students and clinicians to advanced researchers. The handbook consists of 8 sections, averaging 6 to 12 chapters per section. Each section's chapters are written by PERT Consortium members reflecting the consortium's dedication to its goals of advancing PE care. This book spans from basic science, to clinical care and research practice related to PE and is, thus, comprehensive in scope and multidisciplinary in its appeal. Dr Charles J. Grodzin Is a graduate of Emory College, Rush Medical College and is board certified in both Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine. After 18 years of private practice, he joined the faculty of the Emory University School of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Grodzin has served as medical director of the MICU and is the current Medical Directory for Respiratory Therapy, the lead physician for the Emory University Midtown Hospital PERT, attends in the medical ICU, on the pulmonary consult service and sees patients in the outpatient clinic. Dr. Grodzin organizes Emory University Pulmonary Embolism Grand Rounds and founded the Emory University outpatient Pulmonary Embolism Clinic. He is a recent member of the PERT Consortium Board of Directors and is a member of the finance, governance, education committees for the PERT Consortium. Dr. Grodzin was named both a Senior and Distinguished physician by the Department of Medicine at Emory University.

Dr. Geno J. Merli, is a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine, is Co-Director of the Jefferson Vascular Center, Thomas Jefferson University and Senior Vice President & Associate Chief Medical Officer at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr Merli received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency in rehabilitation medicine and internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr Merli is a nationally recognized expert in the areas of prophylaxis for and management of deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (DVT/PE), as well as for the medical consultation of surgical patients. His research interests have focused on prophylaxis for DVT/PE and the management of DVT in medically ill patients, total joint replacement, trauma, and high-risk cancer patients. The recipient of numerous teaching awards during his career, Dr. Merli received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1987and the Dean's Citation for significant contribution to the advancement of education in 2004. He was named Ludwig A. Kind professor, an endowed chair in the department of medicine, in 1998. Dr. Merli is also a retired Lt. Col. in the US Army Reserve. He served as Commander of the 348th General Hospital (HUM) in Ashley, PA, and was awarded the Army Achievement and Commendation Medals.

Dr. Merli serves on the editorial board of Hospitalist News. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Hospital Practice. He is also a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Chest, Vascular Medicine, Journal of Thrombosis & Haemostasis, and Journal of Thrombosis & Thrombolysis. He is co-editor, with Howard H. Weitz, M.D., of the 3rd edition of Medical Management of the Surgical Patient, and Co-Chairs the Jefferson-Mayo Clinic national course on the perioperative care of the surgical patient with medical problems. In addition, Drs. Merli and Weitz, present an innovative program called Consult Guys at the Annual American College of Physicians Meeting and monthly on Annals of Internal Medicine website. Dr. Meri is active in the PERT Consortium serving on numerous committees and participating in the PERT National meetings.

Dr. Charles B. Ross is an honors graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (1984). He received his training in general surgery at Vanderbilt University, and he completed his fellowship in vascular surgery at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans in 1991. After 15 years in private practice including clinical appointments at Vanderbilt University and the University of Louisville, Dr. Ross transitioned to full-time academic and later, institute, practice. Dr. Ross has practiced vascular and endovascular surgery continuously since 1991. Dr. Ross founded the pulmonary embolism program with his colleagues at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital in late 2012 which then transitioned to the PAH PERT in 2014. He has continuously participated with colleagues in metro Atlanta and North Georgia to expand education and awareness of modern care for pulmonary embolism. Dr. Ross served on the Board of Directors of the PERT ConsortiumTM 2016 2019. He has served on multiple committees of the PERT ConsortiumTM including clinical protocols, education and finance, and he has held a principal role in the PERT ConsortiumTM's Interhospital Transfer Project. Dr. Ross has been panelist and/or program developer for multiple postgraduate programs on the management of pulmonary embolism. Prior to his recruitment in 2012 to his present position in Atlanta, Dr. Ross was Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapeutics at the University of Louisville. Dr. Ross initiated the Level I Cardiovascular Emergency Program at Piedmont Hospital in 2014 and served as Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Services, Piedmont Heart and Vascular Institute through early 2022. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Venous Forum and is a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Rachel Rosovsky , MD, MPH, board-certified hematologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), provides clinical care full-time, supervises trainees and conducts research in area of thrombosis and hemostasis. She is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS), Director of Thrombosis Research in Division of Hematology and Co-Chair of MGH's Thrombosis Committee. She earned her undergraduate degree from University of Pennsylvania, medical degree from HMS, and Master's in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health. She completed residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital and fellowship at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/MGH. Dr. Rosovsky is one of the founders and President-Elect of Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) Consortium and creator/director of PERT multidisciplinary follow up clinic at MGH.
