Lotte Hedeager is Professor at the University of Oslo . She became professor in 1996 and for more than twenty years she taught archaeology and was head of the graduate program. She was one of the initiators of the Nordic Graduate School in Archaeology and served as its director 2006-2021. She has served as member of national and international research councils and review panels, has among others been editor of World Archaeology . Christopher Prescott is Professor emeritus at the University of Oslo and has taught archaeology there since 1996. He has been involved in several national and international archaeological field projects, the Nordic Graduate School in archaeology DialPast and was editor of the Norwegian Archaeological Review. He was previously at the University of Bergen (1989-1996) and was director at the Norwegian Institute in Rome (2017-2021). His research is concerned with Scandinavian Prehistory (Neolithic and Bronze Age, mountain archaeology and transhumance, metallurgy), the Archaic Period in Sicily, disciplinary history, theory and method, environmental archaeology, heritage issues and the illicit trade in archaeological artefacts. Kristian Kristiansen is senior Professor at the University of Gothenburg , Department of Historical Studies, since 1994, and Affiliated professor at Globe Institute, Copenhagen University since 2020. As a broad-minded interdisciplinary researcher, his research combines grand narratives with in-depth studies of local settlements, and collaboration with scientists. Throughout his career he has also been engaged in various capacities in archaeological heritage. He was one of the initiators of the mobility turn in archaeology, launched in his prize awarded book with Thomas Larsson: The Rise of Bronze Age Society, and in his subsequent ERC advanced grant The Rise (2011-2016), in collaboration with the Eske Willerslev aDNA team, and other archaeological sciences (strontium and lead isotopic analyses) it was demonstrated that migrations and mobility had been a prominent feature of the genetic and cultural formation of western Eurasia during the Bronze Age. Scandinavia is a multiethnic zone of cultural contact on Europe's northwestern margins. This fact, when considered in the context of the region's very diverse environmental conditions, has established Scandinavia as an exceptional anthropological and historical laboratory for the study of general issues in human history. Indeed, Scandinavian archaeology was a pioneer in and remains a force in scientific archaeology. This is naturally a function of the region's rich prehistory and archaeological record, characterised by iconic sites and monuments, finds, and artefacts. The creation of a platform for exploring the past is linked to strong public support for the creation of exceptional museums, strong heritage legislation and management organisations, and dedicated academic institutions and training programmes. At an early stage, prehistoric archaeology instituted multidisciplinary practices, collaborating with the ecological and natural sciences, as well as anthropological and historical disciplines. The chapters that make up The Oxford Handbook of Scandinavian Archaeology to 1050 CE are written by a range of contemporary Scandinavian and international experts and explore the region's prehistory and archaeological practices. Authors have been selected not only for their expertise in the subject matter, but also to demonstrate the variability in theoretical and methodological approaches found in contemporary Scandinavian archaeology. The 83 chapters endeavour to present an up-to-date and comprehensive prehistory of the region from the Palaeolithic to the Viking Age, as well as discussion of the discipline's history and institutions, the region's diverse environmental conditions, important elements of interdisciplinary collaboration, and significant themes of research. Focusing on Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the book also contains chapters from Finland and the eastern Baltic, Iceland and Anglo-Saxon Ireland, Scotland, and Ireland. The Handbook provides a detailed, holistic overview of this astonishingly diverse field, and its chapters will be required reading for anyone interested in the history and heritage of the Nordic countries.
