Marion Kaplan is Skirball Professor Emerita of Modern Jewish History at New York University. She is the author of two prize-winning books: The Making of the Jewish Middle Class: Women, Family and Identity in Imperial Germany (1991)and Between Dignity and Despair: Jewish Life in Nazi Germany (1998); and co-editor of a third prize winner with Deborah Dash Moore, Gender and Jewish History, (2011). More recently she published Dominican Haven: The Jewish Refugee Settlement in Sosúa, 1940-1945 (2008) and Hitler's Jewish Refugees: Hope and Anxiety in Portugal (2020). Natalia Aleksiun is the Harry Rich Professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Her research focuses on Polish Jews, the Holocaust, Jewish intelligentsia in east-central Europe, Polish-Jewish relations, and modern Jewish historiography. Previous publications include Conscious History: Polish Jewish Historians before the Holocaust (2021) and Dokad dalej? Ruch syjonistyczny w Polsce 19441950 (2002). Most recently, she co-edited Entanglements of War: Social Networks during the Holocaust (2023) andThe Rescue Turn and the Politics of Holocaust Memory (2024).

Ordinary victims' voices from the Holocaust are still far less recognized than those of the perpetrators, Volume III of The Cambridge History of the Holocaust centers upon victims' perspectives, examining their experiences, responses, and fates. Chapters encompass the ordeals of a range of persecuted groups: Jews, Roma and Sinti, and homosexuals, as well as those with physical and mental challenges, Slavs, and Soviet prisoners of war. Covering a wide geographical scope, contributors underscore the differences between victim experiences in eastern and western Europe while highlighting national and regional complexities. Through a breadth of primary sources including diaries, letters, memoirs and interviews, readers gain insight into the diverse reactions and behaviors of victims as well as those who helped or hurt them. This volume offers an overview of Holocaust scholarship through victims' voices, while highlighting areas for further research.
