Klappentext

This book presents the first comprehensive study on Choeje Jigme Phuntsok, the founder of Larung Buddhist Institute of the Five Sciences. In two decades, it developed into one of the world's largest institutes to study and practise Tibetan Buddhism, with Choeje and Larung Gar ranking among the key driving forces for the revitalisation of Tibetan Buddhism during the post-Mao era.

Chapters delves into Choeje's entire life and career, to explore the awakening of his qualities as a spiritual leader, his contributions to the revitalisation, and his endeavours to spread Tibetan Buddhism across an increasingly vast region. Songyun Hu situates Choeje's life and activities within a dynamic social-political context in China, interweaving detailed accounts of his personal journey and career.

Through examining his unwavering aspiration, profound foresight, and adaptive resourcefulness, this book traces how Choeje weathered the storm, safeguarded the tradition, and brought the Dharma to flourish when opportunity arose. Additionally, Songyun Hu offers insights into the early historical and deep spiritual conditions, illuminating the factors that contributed to a resurgence of Tibetan Buddhism in contemporary China.
