The amount collected in taxation, the items which have been taxed, and the classes of people on whom the tax burden has fallen, have all changed greatly in the period from the Restoration to the present. This book considers how and why these changes took place, and some of the consequences which have flowed from them.

ROY DOUGLAS is Emeritus Reader at the University of Surrey. He is author of a number of historical books, including The History of the Liberal Party, 1895-1970 and Land, People and Politics: A History of the Land Question in the United Kingdom, 1878-1952; several books on 20th century diplomatic history, and on international history studied through the medium of cartoons.
