This book presents an overview of the most important current developments in the pre-analytical handling of tissue. It addresses in particular potential ways to improve the situation whereby methods employed in the pre-analytical phase the period from surgical removal of tissue to the start of pathological processing have remained essentially unchanged for decades with only modest standardization. It is examined how the pre-analytical period can be optimized, resulting not only in an increase in diagnostic quality but also in a reduction in processing time and costs. Among the key topics examined are the so-called cold ischemia time between tissue removal and fixation, the potential superiority of vacuum-based preservation over immediate formalin fixation, two-temperature fixation, molecular analysis methods, and the pre-analytics of specimens from particular tissues. Manfred Dietel erhielt nach dem Medizinstudium an der Universität Hamburg und seiner weiteren wissenschaftlichen Ausbildung am Institut für Pathologie des Universitäts-Krankenhauses Hamburg Eppendorf dort eine Professur für das Fach 'Pathologie und Pathologische Anatomie' im Fachbereich Medizin der Universität Hamburg. Mit seiner Berufung zum ordentlichen Professor wurde er 1989 Direktor des Instituts für Allgemeine Pathologie der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel und wechselte 1993 in seine jetzige Stellung als Direktor des Instituts für Pathologie der Charité, Rudolf-Virchow-Haus, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Er war und ist in der akademischen Selbstverwaltung u.a. tätig als Dekan der Medizinischen Fakultät der Charité der Humboldt-Universität, Mitglied des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats der Bundesärztekammer, Ärztlicher Direktor und Vorsitzender des Vorstandes der Charité und Mitglied des Medizinausschuss des Wissenschaftsrats. Aktuell ist Professor Dietel Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Pathologie und Mitglied des Vorstands der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Senologie und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Telemedizin. Dietels wissenschaftliches Interesse gilt insbesondere der molekularen Tumorpathologie mit Untersuchungen zur Zytostatikaresistenz, prädiktiven Testung zum therapeutischen Ansprechen maligner Tumore und zu tumorassoziierten genetischen Veränderungen (mol. Biomarker). Weitere Schwerpunkte sind neue Verfahren in der histologischen Diagnostik maligner Tumoren (spez. Gynäkopathologie) und die technische Entwicklung von Telepathologiesystemen. Sein Fokus in Krankenversorgung und Lehre sind die histologische Diagnostik an operativ oder endoskopisch entnommenem Gewebsmaterial (in vivo-Diagnostik).

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Joachim Meyer ist Leiter der Klinik für Allgemein- und Viszeralchirurgie am Städtischen Klinikum Solingen und gilt als Experte für Tumoren des Verdauungstrakts. Er ist Mitautor seit der 6. deutschen Auflage der TNM-Klassifikation.
