Er war GastprofessoranderUCBerkeley, USA,Professor fürMechanik an der TH Darmstadt und Direktor des Darmstädter Zentrums für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen. Seit 1998 ist er Professor für Baumechanik und NumerischeMechanik sowieDirektor des Zentrums für Computational Engineering Sciences an der Universität Hannover. Er ist Mitherausgeber von internationalen Journals und Editor-in-Chief der Zeitschrift Computational Mechanics .
