As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, how should Catholics respond to the practical, spiritual, and ethical challenges it presents?

In Catholic Wisdom in the Age of AI: 5 Principles for Embracing Our Magnificent Humanity in a Virtual World, author and cultural observer Nick Ripatrazone offers a timely Catholic guide to understanding and navigating the age of artificial intelligence.

Drawing on Catholic social teaching, the writings of popes from Leo XIII to Leo XIV (including the recent encyclical Magnifica Humanitas), and the prophetic insights of media theorist Marshall McLuhan, Ripatrazone provides a framework for discerning both the promise and the dangers of emerging technologies.

As technological advances reshape every aspect of life, they raise urgent questions about human dignity, work, environmental responsibility, moral decision-making, and our relationships with one another. Ripatrazone addresses these challenges through five principles that help Catholics engage the digital age with wisdom, hope, and fidelity to the faith:

1. Technological Stewardship: Catholics are called to care for creation and use technology responsibly. AI raises important questions about environmental sustainability, artistic integrity, and spiritual well-being, challenging us to become wise stewards rather than passive consumers.
2. The Dignity of Work: From the Industrial Revolution to the AI revolution, Leo XIII and Leo XIV have defended the dignity of human labor. Technology should serve humanity--not replace it--and Catholics are called to protect and celebrate what makes us uniquely human.
3. Resisting Transhumanism: Technology promises convenience and enhancement, but it can also tempt us to view ourselves as machines to be optimized, upgraded, or discarded. Catholics must affirm the inherent dignity and worth of every person.
4. The Incarnation and Embodied Living: An increasingly digital culture can foster isolation, distraction, and moral confusion. Grounded in the mystery of the Incarnation, Catholics are called to cultivate authentic relationships, embrace embodied living, and develop healthier habits online.
5. Solidarity in a Connected World: As technological power becomes concentrated in the hands of a few, systems of surveillance and control expand, and the vulnerable are often left behind. Catholics are called to stand in solidarity with the marginalized and bear witness to Christ's love for the entire human family. Thought-provoking, sobering, and ultimately hopeful, Catholic Wisdom in the Age of AI reminds readers that no matter how advanced technology becomes, our God-given dignity and embodied humanity remain irreplaceable. As Ripatrazone writes, "Catholics should fear not for what lies ahead: we are ready. Discernment through tradition, scripture, and Christ will guide the way."
