In the field of Hodgkin's lymphoma, many new data have been collected during the last decade both on the cell of origin of this disease and on more effective therapies to cure the majority of pa tients even in the advanced stages. Therefore, it seems to be justi fied to compile these new data in a special volume of Recent Re sults in Cancer Research. This volume summarizes the contribu tions presented at the First International Symposium on Hodgkin's Disease that took place in Cologne (FRG) on October 2-3, 1988. There is little doubt that the Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (H and RS) cells and their variants represent the malignant population in Hodgkin's lymphoma; however, there is still a fierce debate as to the possible cell of origin of Hand RS cells. Many of the problems confounding earlier research into this question were related to the difficulty or virtual impossibility, of obtaining purified populations of Hand RS cells. Most of the recent progress stems from the establishment of permanent cell lines of Hand RS cells in culture.

Volker Diehl, absolvierte eine Ausbildung in Innerer Medizin, klinischer Virologie und Hämato-Onkologie am Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, am Karolinska Institut in Stockholm und an der Med. Hochschule Hannover. Bis 1983 arbeitet er am Aufbau der Arbeitsgruppe für internistische Onkologie an der Med. Hochschule Hannover, seit 1983 ist er Ordinarius für Innere Medizin in Köln. Seine Arbeits- und Forschungsschwerpunkte sind: Innere Medizin, Hämatologie, Onkologie, Infektionskrankheiten und Immunologie. Seit 1994 ist er Mitglied im Editorial Board des NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE, 1995- 2001 war er Vorsitzender der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Hämatologie und Onkologie (DGHO),1999 war er Vorsitzender der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin (DGIM).

This work contains recent results of basic and clinical studies in Hodgkin's disease up to early 1988. It deals with tumor immunological, genetical and molecular biological findings obtained from Hodgkin's derived cell lines and biopsies of lymphomas in Hodgkin's disease. New aspects concerning the histopathology of Hodgkin's disease are also described. In the clinical section recent developments in diagnosis such as immunoscintigraphy with monoclonal antibodies and bone marrow scintigraphy are dealt with, as are new therapeutic approaches that take into account the relevance of risk factor analysis for therapeutic strategies. Finally, new therapeutic avenues such as bone marrow transplantation are covered in detail. The best known researchers in the field present their latest data in this volume, thus assuring that all relevant aspects of Hodgkin's disease are covered.
