It is now 75 years since the Nakba, the catastrophe that saw the majority of Palestinians driven from their homes and land and into exile in neighbouring countries. Since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, there have been attempts to find a solution to what has been described as an 'insoluble crisis', but to no avail. On the contrary, although a two-state solution is the preferred international option, facts on the ground, together with a breakdown in negotiations between the two sides and the increasingly strident intransigence of the current Israeli government, has meant that there is no end in sight to the conflict, and this has become immeasurably worse since October 2023. In response, Palestinians and others have been considering alternative scenarios, from the 'right of return' movement of young Palestinian refugees to the notion of Palestinians as a nation 'wherever they are' and the possibility of a 'one-state solution in the whole of former mandate Palestine. The book argues that this unjust situation urgently needs to be reassessed and addressed, especially in light of present dangers. It synthesizes and critically explores various approaches to the 'insoluble conflict' from a Palestinian perspective in terms of human rights, especially the right to dignity and recognition.
