Addressing sustainable development in teaching and learning is among the most urgent challenges for modern educational theory and practice. This book explores the unique contribution technology and vocational education can provide to meet these urgent needs.

This work analyses the relationships between technology education (TE) and technical, vocational education and training (TVET) at the secondary school level in terms of empowering students for addressing issues of sustainable development in a responsible manner. It considers the contribution of TE and TVET in terms of education for sustainable development and lifelong learning. In this context ESD is conceptualised through moral, aesthetic and practical perspectives. Issues such as advancing girls through the use of particular projects, creating equal educational opportunities via use of ICT and enhancing employability and social responsibility are examined throughout the book. A number of practical strategies are proposed for meeting young peoples' needs and to help in developing their social responsibility. A case study of Russia analysed the 'Russian' approach to sustainable development and education for sustainable development, illustrating processes relevant to TE and TVET.

Aysuhan Tuba SARAL is a PhD graduate and a Senior Research Assistant at the Education University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include education for refugees and asylum seekers, green skills development, and social entrepreneurship for marginalized groups. Dr. Margarita Pavlova (PhD Australia; PhD Russia; MEd USA; BEd Hons Russia) is the Director of the UNEVOC Centre (Hong Kong), which is a member of the global UNESCO-UNEVOC network, and an Associate Professor at the Department of International Education, the Education University of Hong Kong. Her research focus is on policy, planning and curriculum development in vocational education at both national and international levels, with a particular emphasis on green skills development and greening of the vocational education sector. Dr. Pavlova’s regional research and development projects in Asia have been funded by different agencies including the Asian Development Bank, The World Bank, UNESCO and the EuropeanTraining Foundation (ETF). Dr. Pavlova has published widely in the fields of her expertise. She currently serves on the editorial advisory boards of two book series published by Springer: Technical and Vocational Education and Training: Issues, Concerns and Prospects, and Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: Issues, Concerns and Prospects.
