John Justin Smith started at the Chicago Daily News in 1937, left in 1941 to serve in the U.S. Army, and returned to the paper after World War II, in which he served with the 162nd Infantry Regiment of the 41st Division in the Pacific theater. A reporter, columnist, critic, and travel editor, he retired in 1983. His war service left him with a paralyzed foot and relapses of malaria for the rest of his life. He died in 1989. His family discovered his memoir some years later.
