Jörn Wichert war nach seinem Geologiestudium 1998 für ein paar Jahre in der Schieferindustrie tätig. Seitdem führte er zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Vorhaben an der TU Bergakademie Freiberg durch. Zeitgleich besuchte Wichert seit 2000 zahlreiche Schiefervorkommen in Europa und den USA und führte Untersuchungen über deren Eigenschaften durch. Begleitet waren diese Arbeiten von intensiven Recherchen über Schiefer. Diese langjährige Arbeit mündete in einer Promotion, die seit 2020 der Fachöffentlichkeit in erweiterter Form als Kompendium in englische Sprache vorliegt. Es bildete die Grundlage für das nun vorliegende deutsche Schieferbuch, welches zahlreiche Überarbeitungen und Erweiterungen beinhaltet.
