Damien Echols is an American author who first became known as one of three teenagers, the West Memphis Three, wrongly convicted of a triple murder in 1994. DNA evidence secured his release from death row in 2011, after which Echols authored several autobiographical and spiritual/magickal books. A New York Times bestselling author, Echols has appeared on countless news programs and podcasts and has been featured in documentaries, including the Oscar-nominated HBO premiere film Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory. Interviews with Echols have been featured in magazine and newspaper articles such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and Vanity Fair. In 2020 he starred in Netflix’s Midnight Gospel. On death row, largely kept in solitary confinement, Echols studied and practiced Buddhism and was ordained in the Rinzai tradition of Zen by a Japanese Zen master. An avid reader, he became interested in ceremonial magick and spent his two decades in prison studying magick and esoterica. He lives in upstate New York with his wife Lorri Davis.

The Alchemy of the Broken Blade is Echols’s attempt to trace that current—not through theory but through lived experience. It’s a book born from extremes: from death row and solitary confinement, from spiritual breakdown, and resurrection, from years spent clawing his way out of despair and into a life he could stand inside again. And through that process, Echols discovered a path—not clean or easy but sacred. A path rooted in discipline, ritual, devotion, and presence.

This book is an amalgamation of Eastern (Kaizen) and Western (Hermetic) philosophies, braided together into a single spiritual process for transformation. Alchemy and Kaizen may seem worlds apart—one symbolic, the other procedural. But they share a root principle: transformation through presence. The core concept revolves around “the Way” (do), a path of personal and lasting transformation achieved through practices like Tang Soo Do and inner alchemy. The author shares personal stories of finding the “Way” in prison and after his release. He also stresses that the external form of practice is less important than the internal relationship to it, advocating for engagement with the world and finding the sacred in the mundane.

“I wrote this book because I believe the way we live needs to be reimagined. Not in some utopian, idealistic way—but in a grounded, embodied way. The book is structured in four parts to mirror the four steps of the alchemical process:

• Part One: Deconstruction—examines breaking down the false self and recognizing internal enemies, using experiences such as solitary confinement as a metaphor for turning a a “tomb” into a “temple.”
• Part Two: Reconstruction—focuses on rebuilding through tools such as magick, alchemy, Tang Soo Do, Kaizen, Bushido, and concepts such as the Chil Sung (Seven Stars), emphasizing continuous improvement and virtue.
• Part Three: Integration—discusses putting knowledge into practice in daily life, making one’s personal do a way of living.
• Part Four: Becoming—addresses the “Alchemy of Now,” focusing on embodied presence and what happens after crossing the abyss, emphasizing that the path is continuous and requires ongoing practice.
