This book is a direct response to a critical reality: resilience is no longer a conceptual ambition; it is a design, governance, and societal imperative. This volume advances a clear position that resilient futures will not emerge from isolated technological fixes or abstract policy frameworks, but from the deliberate integration of ecological systems, spatial intelligence, and community agency. It is divided into three subject sections: environmental systems, territorial adaptation, and lived, human-scale actions. Part I examines how nature-based systems might be incorporated into urban form as functional frameworks through ecological design, green infrastructure, and morphology. Part II expands the lens to coastal and regional contexts, where large-scale vulnerabilities demand design responses that are anticipatory, place-specific, and deeply attuned to environmental thresholds. With an emphasis on community-led design, adaptive reuse, and micro-interventions that show how social resilience is created, negotiated, and maintained, Part III grounds resilience in everyday reality.
We question traditional resilience narratives through a variety of international case studies, ranging from Bangladesh to contested urban settlements, Ireland to Iran. It presents design as an active tool for change rather than a passive reaction. The message is clear: resilient urban futures need to be developed with communal intelligence, managed with intent, and designed with nature.

Ali CHESHMEHZANGI is Head of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning and a Professor at The University of Queensland (UQ), Brisbane, Australia. He is also Adjunct Professor at the School of Architecture, Hunan University, China. He is among the top 20 global scholars in the urban sustainability research area. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Urban Sustainability Book Series with Springer Nature. With a career spanning over two decades, he has made significant contributions to the academic and professional communities, with a focus on sustainable and environmentally conscious design. So far, Ali has published over 650 journal papers, articles, conference papers, book chapters, and reports. He has published more than 68 academic books, some of which have received awards at the international, national, provincial, and municipal levels. He also has received international awards and recognition for his research on urban resilience studies and sustainability research, as well as the 2018 Vice-Chancellor s award for his impactful contribution to higher education.
Bao-Jie HE is a (Full) Professor of Urban Climate and Sustainable Built Environment with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Chongqing University, China. He is leading the Centre for Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Cities with the focus on Heat-Resilient and Low-Carbon Planning and Design. He is also an Associate Professor at University of Queensland, Australia. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed publications in high-ranking journals and has a SCOPUS H-index of 61. He is the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors of more than 10 reputable international journals. He has chaired more than 20 national and state-level research projects. He received the received the Most Cited Chinese Researcher Title from 2024 onwards, Highly Cited Researcher Title (Clarivate) from 2022 onwards, and the Global Top 2% Scientists by the Mendeley from 2020 onwards.
Silvia MICHELI is an Associate Professor and Program Convener of the Bachelor of Architectural Design at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Queensland (UQ). She joined UQ in 2012 after teaching and researching at the Politecnico di Milano. Silvia works across design and history of architecture. Her design research is cross-disciplinary, focusing on the notion of 'productive city' and how small-scale projects can enhance liveability and resilience in our communities. Her co-authored book, House, Precinct and Territory: Design Strategies for the Productive City (ORO, 2024) discusses concrete scenarios for urban production. Silvia is concurrently investigating strategies to enhance urban horticulture and farming practices through design to increase food security in the urban environment.
Dan LUO is a Senior Lecturer and Program Convener of the Master of Urban Development and Design at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Queensland (UQ). She earned a PhD in Architecture from Tsinghua University (2019), Master of Architecture from Columbia University (2014), and an MSc in Computer and Information Technology at the University of Pennsylvania (2023). Dan is also a key researcher within the ARC Advance Timber Hub, Blue Economy CRC, Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre, and Transport Academic Partnership Project, leading projects with public agencies and academic partners. Her extensive collaborations span international networks of partners. Her projects have been exhibited at the Milan Triennial, the Architecture Center New York, and the China Millennium Monument. From 2014 to 2019, she served as Director of International Collaboration for the China Building Centre, where she curated international design competitions and educational programs for universities, developers, and government agencies.
