Uplifting Multilingual Learners provides a groundbreaking, research-backed answer. As the first book on the market to directly combine trauma-responsive practices with multilingual education, bestselling authors Debbie Zacarian and Andrea Honigsfeld introduce an innovative empowerment framework for supporting the more than 5.3 million English learners in U.S. public schools. For students affected by war, forced migration, family separation, or discrimination, traditional trauma-informed approaches often focus on deficits. This essential guide shifts the paradigm to linguistically and culturally sustaining pedagogy—showing educators how to build on students' inherent strengths, foster agency, and cultivate a deep sense of school belonging.

Grounded in decades of research and extensive field experience, this book bridges classroom instruction, schoolwide culture, and family-community partnerships. Zacarian and Honigsfeld equip teachers, instructional coaches, counselors, and school leaders with personal student narratives, actionable classroom strategies, reflection prompts, and tools for sustaining educator well-being.

Key insights include:

• An empowerment-centered paradigm shift: Moving beyond traditional, deficit-based trauma frameworks to leverage students' linguistic and cultural assets.
• Classroom & schoolwide resilience practices: Concrete strategies to build psychological safety, student agency, and peer collaboration across grade levels.
• Culturally sustaining family & community partnerships: Methods for engaging families experiencing adversity with dignity, trust, and mutual respect.
• Sustaining educator well-being: Practical tools to prevent secondary traumatic stress and foster sustainable, collaborative team practices.
• Professional learning integration: Chunked content, reflection prompts, and action steps designed for immediate application in staff meetings and PLCs. Uplifting Multilingual Learners demonstrates that when schools blend trauma-responsive care with culturally sustaining pedagogy, multilingual students transform adversity into resilience, confidence, and lasting academic success.
