Children of Blood and Bone meets The Scorpion and the Night Blossom in a high-stakes, YA afro-fantasy where two teens race across the desert to save a kingdom trapped in eternal darkness ... if the soldiers, dragons, and debt collectors don't catch up to them first.

In a world devoid of a sun, the night sky means death and we are living in its shadow.

After seven years of darkness, Baba Alade is exhausted. Being a courier shouldn't be that hard but, when you have a bad leg, no dragon, and no sun, you can never rest. And on top of that, he owes a dangerous dragon-summoner more money than he could ever hope to earn.

Out of options, he agrees to take Layo Sowande, to the Obsidian Mountains to get the payout he needs. Unfortunately for him, Layo is full of secrets. But even worse-she's curious about his own.

As they race across the desert with half the kingdom chasing them down, Baba realizes this job might be more than he bargained for. Especially since the queen who plunged their world into darkness when she killed all the phoenix-summoners is hunting down a mysterious package...that Layo is carrying.

As tensions rise and secrets are revealed, Baba and Layo grow closer-but their enemies are getting closer too, and if they want to see the sun rise again, they'll have to survive the night.
