This book identifies processes and mechanisms related to police integrity and its enhancement. The authors surveyed over 3,000 police officers from 30 U.S. police departments on how they would respond to typical scenarios where integrity is challenged. The authors conclude that enhancing police integrity goes well beyond culling out "a few bad apples." The book reveals insights into police subcultures and police management, incorporates theoretical arguments and practical examples, and even provides templates that can be used by any police force. It details four aspects upon which Police administrators should focus: organizational rulemaking; detecting, investigating and disciplining rule violations; circumscribing the informal "code of silence" that prohibits police from reporting the misconduct of their colleagues; and understanding the influence of public expectations and agency history.

Maria (Maki) Haberfeld is a Professor of Police Science, in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She was born in Poland and immigrated to Israel as a teenager. She served in the Israel Defense Forces in a counter-terrorist unit and left the army at the rank of a sergeant. Prior to coming to John Jay she served in the Israel National Police and left the force at the rank of lieutenant. She also worked as a special consultant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in the New York Field Office. Since 2001, she has been involved in developing, coordinationg and teaching in a special educational program at John Jay for the New York City Police Department.
