Arthur Elgort wurde 1940 geboren und ist in New York City aufgewachsen. Er besuchte die Stuyvesant High School und das Hunter College, wo er anfangs Malerei studierte bevor er zur Fotografie wechselte. Unter Elgorts zahlreichen Büchern befinden sich Personal Fashion Photographs (1983) und der Bestseller Models Manual, der während des Booms der Supermodels 1994 veröffentlicht wurde.
