In the Sixties and early Seventies, Alice Cooper was simply a rock group, but as their lead singer, Vincent Damon Furnier, developed his modern-day Grand Guignol character, Alice Cooper became his stage name. Then, on a wave of global success, he legally changed it to his own. As his story will tell, the two Alices became schizophrenically, almost fatally intertwined; after a harrowing journey to Hell and back, there are today two very different Alice Coopers: the deeply religious sober man behind the mask and the Godfather of Shock Rock who wears a snake around his neck. With a career spanning six decades, Alice''s story features witty, intimate anecdotes featuring Salvador Dali, Bob Hope, John Lennon, Groucho Marx, Vincent Price, Frank Sinatra, Erroll Flynn, Bette Davis, Jim Hendrix, Gerald Ford, Andy Warhol, Tiger Woods, to name a few, but he''s also an acute observer of dysfunction and despair, wildness and criminality, urges and addictions, transgressions and human goodness. And so he tells his story from both perspectives: angel on one shoulder, devil on the other. Devil on My Shoulder is the definitive memoir from one of the most iconic music artists of our generation.

**ONE OF THE TIMES BOOKS NOT TO MISS

The definitive autobiography from Alice Cooper, the Godfather of Shock Rock and one of the world's most iconic musicians with a career spanning six decades.**

In the beginning, Alice Cooper was the name of a rock group. Then my stage name. And then a monster. Now I've written a book that tracks Alice's 'evilution', how he and I became almost fatally intertwined, and how I've tamed him at last.

After over thirty records and sixty-plus years, the story of Alice Cooper has become a tangle of embellishments, elaborations and outright fabrications, that I think it's time to sort reality from myth: the slaughtered chickens, the bans and record burnings, the evangelical terrors, Ouija boards and poltergeists, resurrections and revenge from the grave, the cross-dressers, thieves, drug addicts and hopeless alcoholics, the house fires and car crashes - all will be revealed for what they really were.

I'm also coming clean about the extent of my addictions, my blackout years, the creative process fuelled by alcohol, drugs and round-the-clock TV, my scramble to the top of the pile and the terrible slide back down. I want to talk about the origin of Cold Ethyl, the guillotine and the dead babies, the best and worst of my reviews, my feelings of guilt and regret after people got hurt or died, what life was like on the road until the wheels came off the bus, what a romantic I am at heart and how I've stayed married for half a century even after my wife came at me with a frying pan.

And I want to talk about God. Don't worry, I'm not gonna bang you on the head with a Bible, I just want to describe how it is that I found Him dwelling in me. Alice, that inveterate liar, was a voice in my ear for so long, whispering lies and sweet nothings, pretending to be my better conscience and my inspiration, pretending to be me, that I think it's only right to present both sides of the story: the angel on one shoulder, the devil on the other.

'Alice is a survivor from the early years of this crazy industry and its wildest days, and a card-carrying member of rock 'n' roll royalty. A bona fide original, he's been the inspiration for so many well-known artists that followed him, Guns N' Roses included. He's also one of the most humble and unassuming people in his position, but somehow still as genuinely rock 'n' roll as it comes. Alice Cooper f***ing rocks.' Slash

'Fact: Alice is one of my oldest and dearest friends. He has a kindness and generosity that is marinated in deep faith; he's also funny as hell, a realist, and uniquely iconic. He can spin a yarn spectacularly and have you hanging on every word. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and this is rich dessert.' Bernie Taupin

'This is the tale of two fascinating characters - Vince Furnier and Alice Cooper - who, between them, took rock music to heights simultaneously shocking and sophisticated, together with a slew of top songs. But, above all, brilliantly and crazily theatrical, which is right up my alley.' Tim Rice

'Like many of us, Alice Cooper is a lot of people sharing one outer shell. Unlike many of us, that shell has performed on stages all over the world. I've known him for years, but I never knew the many versions of him until this revealing, honest, fascinating and sometimes raw autobiography. This book is a journey through the heart of rock 'n' roll, the mind of a wild disciple, and the soul of an artist trying to make sense of it all.' Mitch Albom
