ALAN LAWRANCE is Principal Lecturer in Modern History at the Hatfield Polytechnic School of Humanities, Watford, United Kingdom. He previously held a position as Head of History at Hertfordshire College of Higher Education. Dr. Lawrance has published a book China's Foreign Relations since 1949 (1975) and has made several contributions on Asia to *The Times Educational Supplemen*t.
