Firms must make decisions on whom to award positions that are influential, coveted, and lucrative. Such decisions are fraught with challenge, in part because their consequences are only clear in retrospect. Nevertheless, they must be made in a way that is acceptable to the firm and to would-be competitors for top posts. This volume, which examines decision making across historical epochs, reveals different ways of resolving this challenge.
