In the thaw of Détente, two antagonists broke a taboo in 1973: the communist SED regime and Francoist Spain assumed diplomatic relations. The GDR was the only socialist country in Europe that exchanged ambassadors with Franco's Spain. This study is the first to portray relations between the GDR and Spain, which were in need of explanation from the outset and remained unusual until the end.

Jenny Baumann studierte Geschichte, Anglistik und Hispanistik an der Universität Heidelberg und wurde an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin promoviert. Als Historikerin arbeitet sie an der Schnittstelle zwischen Bildung, Vermittlung, Museum und Ausstellung. Berufliche Stationen waren das Haus der Geschichte, das Dokumentationszentrum Flucht, Vertreibung, Versöhnung sowie derzeit die Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur.
