How does disruption of classes arise and how can it be managed effectively? Teachers work under pressure and often act less rationally than is commonly assumed. This may mean that problems are not resolved by poor attempts to cope, but are instead further aggravated. Class disruptions have an unfavourable effect on teachers= health, on the quality of teaching and on students= motivation and achievement. Prof. Alexander Wettstein heads the Research Group on Social Interaction in Educational Settings at the Teacher Training College in Bern. Together with Dr. Marion Scherzinger, he has for several years been carrying out research on social interaction, classroom disturbances and aggression at the college=s Institute for Research, Development and Evaluation.
