As the vehicles of textual tradition described in the first part of this study reveal, the "Mirabilia Romae" can be numbered among the most popular medieval descriptions of Rome. However, the two texts designated as "Mirabilia Romae" originated under different circumstances. The "Mirabilia Romae" proper is a listing of the buildings of Classical Antiquity to be found in Rome and is thus in the antique tradition of the descriptio urbis whereas the "Mirabilia Romae vel potius Historia et descriptio urbis Romae" is a guide for pilgrims to Rome as a site of Christendom. In the second part the study concentrates on the "Mirabilia Romae" proper. The German and Dutch translations are edited together with their Latin sources and provided with an exhaustive commentary. Finally the question of genre attribution is discussed and references provided for the many adaptations of the "Mirabilia" in the framework of other medieval texts.
