The study undertakes a systematic narratological analysis of ambivalence in 15 th and 16 th century romances. Rather than focusing on their cultural and historical context, it explores the literary potential and diverse functions of ambivalent narrative, thus providing a different perspective on the narrative strategies of pre-modern texts and their theoretical and methodological understanding.
