The story of the Knight of the Swan does not just fascinate us due to its otherworldliness and the "forbidden question," but also due to its title character, an "undine in knight form." This study asks how this material was transmitted and transformed in German literature before 1500, examines the French and Latin literary sources for the German series of works, and devotes an entire interdisciplinary chapter to Richard Wagner's Lohengrin.
