In the 12 th -century, islands, caves, and forests became settings for extraordinary narratives of the beyond. The protagonists physically occupy the spaces of paradise and purgatory in non-visionary ways, have otherworldly, eschatological experiences, and return to the world unscathed. This work examines narratological interpretations of this epistemological conundrum from diachronic, discourse historical, and cultural studies perspectives.
