Stefan George (18681933) was one of the most fascinating cultural figures of classical modernity. Among the prominent features of his works are poetic treatments of the historical canon. This study is the first systematic and comprehensive examination of George's medievalist imaginations. Through detailed case studies, it shows how he shaped the Middle Ages into an important point of reference for a modern cultural elite.
