Using a camp for young legal professionals as an example, Folker Schmerbach begins by analyzing the anti-intellectual and anti-individualist elements and then questions whether or not these camps had the success they wanted. In doing so, he fills a gap in the research on the functioning and effectiveness of this camp, which he compares with similar organizations for young university graduates in a second step. The author also provides contemporary witness accounts: What memories did the 20,000 in the Jüterborg camp have of that time? Is Sebastian Haffner's view that the camp contained "the Third Reich in a nutshell" correct?

Etwa 20.000 männliche Rechtsreferendare absolvierten zwischen Juli 1933 und September 1939 einen achtwöchigen Aufenthalt im Jüterboger Lager als Pflichtbestandteil ihrer juristischen Ausbildung. Folker Schmerbach schließt mit seiner Untersuchung eine Forschungslücke zu Zielsetzungen, Funktionsweise und Wirkungsgeschichten von Schulungslagern, die als Erziehungslager bislang nicht Gegenstand einer vergleichenden Lagerforschung waren. Über eine Institutionengeschichte hinaus ordnet er das Lager in das Gefüge nationalsozialistischer Erziehungseinrichtungen für junge Erwachsene ein, unterzieht es einem Vergleich und geht der Frage nach, ob es den gewünschten 'Erfolg' erzielte. Auch frühere Teilnehmer wie Graf von Moltke, K. G. Kiesinger und K.
