In the kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia, the nobility did not decline or become decadent, but found a way to remain "on top" by participating in a process of nation-building that encompassed all of society. For the first time, this work considers the nobility in Southeast Europe from the perspective of contemporary historical discourse on aristocracy.
