This study deals with the various ghostly apparitions in Andreas Gryphius's tragedies on the basis of the Early Modern knowledge of ghosts and the literary tradition of ghost portrayals in ancient, Jesuit, and Dutch dramas. It shows how Gryphius recast the epistemically embedded ambiguity of spirits into his own ghostly poetics of the spiritus ex machina.
