The 1897 short story Der Ehrentag (The Hour of Fame) was first published in the journal Die Romanwelt . It tells the story of an unsuccessful actor who is the victim of a cruel joke: during one of his trivial performances, he is celebrated by a gang of hired claqueurs , and feels so ashamed that he goes on to hang himself. This historical-critical edition presents the surviving manuscript, making it possible to trace the genesis of the text.
