As words and word formation units are adopted from other languages, a process of naturalization begins. This study investigates the graphematic assimilation of foreign words into German during the 19 th century. It examines the factors that favor or inhibit adaptation to native relationships of phonemes to graphemes and focuses scholarly attention on the relationship between written usage and codification.
