How is the female body portrayed in contemporary Japanese literature? Stagings of sexuality and violence in works by Taeko, Natsuo, and Hitomi question social taboos and traditional female roles. Drawing on the theories of Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, and Julia Kristeva, Von Garnier demonstrates how literature becomes both a means of social critique and the aesthetic of a subversive femininity.
