R.B. Tollinton was educated at Oxford and Dublin universities. He was ordained in 1892. He was editor of the Chelmsford Diocesan Chronicle from 1915-1926 and was made Hon. Canon of Chelmsford in 1919. He died in 1932.

Originally published in 1932, this book is based on a series of lectures delivered in Cambridge in 1931. The views of the universe as held by the great teachers of Ancient Alexandria are discussed: Philo, Clement, Origen, Plotinus and the Gnostics are considered.
