Having subdued the Germans in Sicily in 1943 the allies succeeded in advancing further into the Italian mainland. Vast parts of Italy had already been destroyed. The population suffered from hunger and thirst. In the course of the 'Battles of Supplies' the reconquest of the seaport Anzio was of great strategical importance.
